Pain management in palliative care is one of the most important aspects of patient management.
This educational resource, developed in conjunction with Dr Melanie Jefferson, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Cardiff, delivers a series of self-assessment questions based around specific clinical scenarios testing the user on the typical aspects of pain management in a palliative setting.
On successful completion of this resource, you will be presented with a certificate of completion to include in your PREP or CPD portfolio.
Aims
- To implement the principles underlying management of cancer pain in different clinical scenarios.
- To reflect upon the holistic management of patients and how it applies in daily clinical practice.
- To further develop your clinical decision making skills in the management of cancer pain.
Objectives
- To correctly assess the potential causes of pain to enable development of the best treatment plan.
- To apply the WHO Analgesic ladder appropriately in the management of cancer pain
- To be familiar with the principles and practice of opioid rotation.
- To consider the use of adjuvant drugs in the management of cancer pain
- To clarify the role of non-pharmacological treatments in cancer pain management.
- To be familiar with the newer opioid preparations and how they may be best used.
- To adopt a holistic model for pain management.
